“Duck Bike:” Custom Mountain Bike Frame

“Duck Bike” was my initial attempt at custom bicycle framebuilding. I based the frame geometry around bikes I’ve ridden and liked, and personalized the heck out of it. There are tweaks I will make to the next version, but overall I’m very proud of how it turned out.

The following pictures provide some reference to the framebuilding process. I bent some of my tubes to accommodate tire clearance, mitered tubes with hole saws to ensure gap-free welding, and welded the frame together.

After welding the frame came the finishing touches: I waterjet the seatstay bridge (the first duck!) and brass logos to be brazed on later. I welded tabs for a bash guard and to mount brakes. I brazed a brass tube through my seat tube to allow for internal cable routing (to be ground flush later).

Now for the glamor shots! After sanding the powder coat off my brazed logos, the bike was ready to be assembled and ridden.
